Moss and Algae Treatment Coverage Calculator

Calculate how much moss and algae treatment product you need based on your surface area, infestation severity, and product dilution rate.

Formulas Used

1. Total Surface Area (sq ft)
Total Area = Length × Width × Number of Surfaces

2. Effective Treatment Area (sq ft)
Effective Area = Total Area × Severity Multiplier
  • Light infestation: × 1.0
  • Moderate infestation: × 1.5
  • Heavy infestation: × 2.0

3. Mixed Solution Required (gallons)
Gallons Mixed = Effective Area ÷ Coverage Rate (sq ft / gal)

4. Concentrate Required (fl oz)
Oz Concentrate = Gallons Mixed × Dilution Rate (oz / gal)

5. Water Required (gallons)
Water = Gallons Mixed − (Oz Concentrate ÷ 128)

Assumptions & References

  • Default coverage rate of 200 sq ft per gallon of mixed solution is typical for spray-applied liquid moss and algae treatments (e.g., Wet & Forget, Bayer Moss & Algae Killer). Always check your product label.
  • Default dilution of 3 fl oz concentrate per gallon of water is a common manufacturer recommendation for moderate infestations.
  • The severity multiplier accounts for the additional product absorption and repeat-pass coverage required for denser growth. Heavy infestations may require a second application after 4–6 weeks.
  • Surface area is calculated as a flat rectangle. For pitched roofs, multiply the result by the roof pitch factor (e.g., × 1.12 for a 6/12 pitch).
  • 1 gallon = 128 fl oz = 4 quarts. Concentrate volume is subtracted from total mixed solution to determine water volume.
  • References: EPA guidelines for biocide application; manufacturer label instructions for zinc sulfate, quaternary ammonium, and sodium hypochlorite-based products.
  • Always wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection) and follow local regulations for runoff and disposal of treatment solutions.
